The OHA was established on 5 November 2007, with 34 members including mobile handset makers, application developers, some mobile carriers, chip makers, and led by Google.[4]. Nokia, AT&T and Verizon Wireless are not members of the alliance. Android, the flagship software of the alliance, is based on an open source license and will compete against other mobile platforms developed independently by Apple Inc., Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research In Motion & Symbian.
By April, five months after the announcement, signs were surfacing that Google was experiencing difficulties in rolling Android out. The code base may not be solid and partner developers were at that time left with many questions that delayed implementation[5]. The New York Times confirmed some developers were experiencing problems but also that "others say that creating programs for Android has been painless."[6]
At the same time as the announcement of the formation of the Open Handset Alliance on 5 November, 2007, the OHA also unveiled Android, an open source mobile phone platform based on the Linux operating system.[3] An early look at the SDK was released to developers on 12 November, 2007.[7] T-Mobile plans to deliver its first Android-based handset in 2008 with HTC delivering its first handset in the second half of 2008.[8] On August 18, 2008, the FCC has approved an Android-based mobile device called HTC Dream (DREA100). [9] Wistron NeWeb (WNC) Corp’s Linux-powered handset, the GW4, was shown at CES 2008 and will be supporting the OHA in 2008.[10] T-Mobile announced in August 2008 that they would deliver the first smartphone to use Google's Android software, which is produced by HTC.[11]
